Barbara Shewnack was a hobbyist making jewelry for many years. In 2004, she studied with Bob Hazeltines's Jewelry School. She was learning techniques that she hadn't been exposed to and fine-tuning techniques she had already established. The skills used in Jewelry Design cross over to metal design.

She likes engineering and the innovative aspects of her work. She constantly seeks new approaches to construction.

She says, "I am drawing with a coping saw. I am painting with metal colors, metal forming, oxidation, patina, stamp work, and markers for shading and texture".
