Penne Roberts
I have had a very long association with the New Mexico Potters and Clay Artists Association serving as Secretary (1977 - 1978),
Vice President (1978 - 1979), and President (1979 - 1980). I was the editor of the NMPA newsletter for 12 years and later was the
Ghost Ranch Workshop Co-coordinator for 8 years. These weekend long workshops are continuing every summer and include presentations
by nationally known potters in a wide range of techniques. Much of what I learned about clay philosophy and technique began in the
workshops at Ghost Ranch, I have always thought of the information I acquired at the workshops as an additional undergraduate degree.
In addition to making my regular assortment of pottery, bunnies and tiles, my latest project is to create 100 lidded jars. I decided
these jars can be any size or form. The fun of throwing is to discover different combinations between shapes and lids. Lids can be tricky
to fit nicely to a jar and I see this as a new challenge to gain more experience to get to that goal. The design elements affecting the
form of the vessel and the shape and fit of the lid are critical. So this is an exercise in throwing practice, trimming, 3-dimensional design,
engineering and glaze design and most importantly, having fun with clay.
