My works, Paintings in Pastel, begin with an under-painting that may consist of a value study, a complementary study, or just a flat color base, which simply changes the white of the paper. This makes the development of the final image, with pastels, a dry medium, much more responsive.
I was born in the English Midlands, where I grew up in what I remember as a generally damp, sooty, dark and dreary environment. Perhaps as a result of those earlier experiences, I find myself intrigued with New Mexico's vistas, light, skies and color.
My recent work has involved exploring the glories of Albuquerque sunsets because they have the effect of being not only very abstract but also terribly brilliant in color and impact.
